In space, two Voltrex support vessels exploded as forty-megaton fusion missiles turned them into molten wreckage. If the Trellixians searched the wreckage, they would find nothing useful. The same had been done to the other vessels destroyed in the battle. Searches had been made of the wreckage to ensure nothing valuable remained.

An hour later the two fleets entered hyperspace. Behind them they left a dead and shattered star system.

Chapter Fourteen

The Fury exited hyperspace just outside the Norest System. According to the data files it was one of the more heavily populated Trellixian systems. All four ships came to a stop and quickly reduced their emissions. From the Fury and the Horizon four probes left the ships and entered hyperspace. They would pass through most of the system at speeds greater than the speed of light. The probes would only drop out of hyperspace near their targets to take more detailed scans of the planets, moons, and orbiting structures.

“Probes have been launched,” reported Kia as four small icons appeared on her sensor screen. “We should begin receiving data shortly.”

“There’s an awful lot of ship traffic,” said Second Officer Katana, her eyes wide with concern. “Passive sensor scans are indicating over six hundred spacecraft, maybe more.”

Captain Dolan looked up at the tactical display. At the moment it was only showing the system’s ten planets. This was the fifth Trellixian core system they had scanned. Each system took them deeper into the heart of the Empire. Every time they launched the probes they risked detection.

“Planets four and five are in the liquid water zone,” Chloe reported as she studied the sensor readings the ship had taken so far. There are also some very large artificial constructions around both planets.”

“Habitats,” suggested Lisa. “The planets in this section of the Empire have been colonized much longer than others. It’s reasonable to assume they’ve built a few orbital habitats for their excess population.”

“Maybe,” conceded Brett with a deep frown on his face. “However, it would be cheaper and more reasonable to build a dome colony on a moon somewhere. An orbital habitat would be expensive to run and make very little economic sense to use for handling excessive populations.”

Brenda shook her head. “I don’t believe the Trellixians will look at it economically. All they are looking at is additional living space.”

“Brenda’s right,” Lisa said. “From what we know of the Trellixians they are driven by their exploding population. I bet those are orbital habitats and they are crammed full of civilians.”

Derek turned from his computer console. “If those are orbital habitats we should take as detailed scans of them as are possible. The scans may reveal some construction techniques we may find useful.”

“Agreed,” said Captain Dolan. “This is one of the Trellixians’ primary systems. I want the entire system scanned in detail. Every planet, orbital structure, moon, asteroid, and rock. The secret to defeating them could very well lie in what we discover in this system.”

Mark looked at his crew. He hoped he could get them safely back to Earth.
